Iron & Sulfur Systems

Two ways to remove iron, sulfur, and manganese from your well water: hydrogen peroxide injection or chemical-free Sidekick air injection.

Choose Your Iron & Sulfur System

Both systems oxidize iron, sulfur, and manganese into particles and remove them with an automatic backwash. A water test tells your dealer which one fits your well.

Penguin Water Advanced Oxidation hydrogen peroxide iron and sulfur system
Option 1

Hydrogen Peroxide Injection

Iron Sulfur (rotten egg odor) Manganese Iron & sulfur bacteria (IRB/SRB)

How it works: a proportional metering system injects hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into the incoming water. It oxidizes iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide into particles that a catalytic carbon filter traps and backwashes to drain.

Choose it when: your well has strong sulfur odor or iron and sulfur bacteria. Peroxide is a stronger oxidizer than air. The peroxide supply needs refilling from time to time.

Option 2

Sidekick Air Injection

Iron Sulfur (rotten egg odor) Manganese

How it works: air is drawn into the top of the tank, where it oxidizes iron, manganese, and sulfur into particles. The catalytic carbon media traps them and an automatic backwash flushes them to drain.

Choose it when: you want a chemical-free system with nothing to refill. The single-tank design works with submersible, constant pressure, and jet pumps.

Option 1: Hydrogen Peroxide Injection

Our Advanced Oxidation system injects hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to oxidize dissolved iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide into filterable particles, then removes them automatically with a self-cleaning backwash. Peroxide also controls iron- and sulfur-reducing bacteria (IRB/SRB), a common cause of slime and recurring odor in wells. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen.

Hydrogen Peroxide System Benefits

Stops Iron & Manganese Staining
Say goodbye to the orange stains from iron and the black or brown stains from manganese on sinks, toilets, showers, and laundry.
Removes Sulfur Odor
Completely eliminates the rotten egg smell from hydrogen sulfide so your water is fresh and odor-free.
Controls Iron & Sulfur Bacteria
Hydrogen peroxide also controls iron- and sulfur-reducing bacteria (IRB/SRB), which cause slime, buildup in pipes and fixtures, and odor that keeps coming back.
Low Maintenance
Automatic backwash cycle keeps the system clean. No cartridges to replace, just a periodic hydrogen peroxide refill.

Hydrogen Peroxide System Features

Engineered for reliable, long-lasting performance on even the toughest well water.

Advanced Oxidation Process
Uses hydrogen peroxide to oxidize dissolved iron, sulfur, and manganese into filterable particles for removal.
Hydrogen Peroxide Injection
Meters a controlled dose of H2O2 into the incoming water so contaminants are oxidized before they reach the filter media.
Catalytic Carbon Media
Premium catalytic carbon media enhances oxidation and provides superior filtration capacity.
Automatic Backwash
Programmable backwash cycle automatically cleans the media bed and flushes trapped contaminants.
High Flow Rates
Engineered for whole-house flow rates so every tap delivers clean, treated water simultaneously.

Ask your Penguin Water dealer for tank size, peroxide feed rate, and electrical requirements. How much iron, sulfur, and manganese a system can handle depends on your water chemistry, so a comprehensive water test is the only way to confirm the right model.

Penguin Water Sidekick Air Injection Iron and Sulfur Removal System

Option 2: Sidekick Air Injection

The Sidekick removes iron, sulfur, and manganese with air instead of chemicals. A pocket of air at the top of the tank oxidizes dissolved contaminants into particles, catalytic carbon media traps them, and an automatic backwash flushes them to drain. There is no chemical to buy, store, or refill.

Sidekick Air Injection Features

A single-tank aeration filter built to save water and keep the control valve clean.

Air Injection Technology
Air is injected into the top of the tank after water passes the control valve, so iron is oxidized in the tank and the valve stays free of iron buildup.
Air Draw Without a Backwash
Air draw and backwash are programmed separately, so the air charge is refreshed without a full backwash. That saves thousands of gallons of water a year.
Catalytic Carbon Media
Premium catalytic carbon media enhances oxidation and provides superior filtration capacity.
Works With Any Well Pump
The single-tank design works with standard submersible, constant pressure, and jet pump systems.
Legacy View App
The control valve connects over Bluetooth to phones and tablets for diagnostics, setup, water-use history, and dealer information.
Gentle Air Release
The valve slowly releases the compressed air charge before each backwash, so there is no sudden blast that can knock the drain line loose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both systems remove iron, sulfur, and manganese and clean themselves with an automatic backwash. The Sidekick uses only air, so there is no chemical to refill. Hydrogen peroxide is a stronger oxidizer and also controls iron- and sulfur-reducing bacteria (IRB/SRB), so it suits wells with heavy sulfur odor or bacteria problems. The right choice depends on your water, so start with a water test: your Penguin Water dealer will recommend the system that fits.

Both convert dissolved (invisible) iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide into solid particles, which the catalytic carbon media bed then traps. During the automatic backwash cycle, the trapped contaminants are flushed to drain. The hydrogen peroxide system does the oxidizing with a controlled dose of hydrogen peroxide injected into the incoming water; hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen. The Sidekick does it with a pocket of air at the top of the tank, which is replenished automatically.

It depends on your water. Both systems remove iron, sulfur, and manganese, but how much of each a system can handle depends on your water chemistry and the model, so a comprehensive water test is the only way to confirm the right system. The hydrogen peroxide system is the one to use when contamination is too heavy for air injection alone. Your Penguin Water dealer can test your water and size the system.

Maintenance is light. The automatic backwash cycle handles daily cleaning, and there are no filter cartridges to replace. The hydrogen peroxide system's peroxide supply needs refilling periodically; the Sidekick uses no chemicals, so there is nothing to refill. The catalytic carbon media typically lasts 5–8 years before needing replacement, depending on water quality and usage. Your Penguin Water dealer can perform periodic checkups to ensure peak performance.

No. Both systems are designed specifically for iron, sulfur, and manganese removal. If you also have hard water, we recommend pairing it with our Bluetooth Smart Softener for Well Water, or consider the Well Water Combo System which combines iron/sulfur removal and softening in one integrated package.
